Long before the fun begins, let your hair in on the party by trying these five doable hairstyles from Pageantry & PromTime’s photo shoot hair-and-makeup guru.

I would be the first to recommend letting your hairdresser style your hair for your prom or other big night out. But if you’re in a jam and want to do your own hairdo, follow these pointers to bring your style closer to professional results.

Roller settings: If you are looking for a great electric roller set, Conair makes quite a few good ones. I recommend using the “hot” setting. If your hair is curly, make sure you smooth out the majority of your curls before rolling to avoid ending up with fuzz or frizz.

Flat iron faux pas: Don’t use a flat iron prior to roller setting; if you do, your hair will not take the curl right. If your hair has natural ringlet curls and you want to make them bigger or looser, just smooth out your hair with a big round brush or vented brush.

Spray for all: Whether you have poker-straight or curly hair, you need to use a great setting spray. I recommend using Redken Hot Sets. Make sure you spray each section right before putting it on the roller.

Look 1 (above)
Kelly has naturally curly hair. If yours is too, try using a straightening balm called Power Straight by Sexy Hair Concepts to dry the hair. After drying, apply Hergen Gloss Drops to protect your hair while flat-ironing it. Then, taking 1-inch sections of your hair starting from the bottom, use the flat iron for straightening. To match Kelly’s style, part your hair slightly off-center

Look 2
Vanessa’s fine, shoulder-length layered hair is somewhat dense. So use medium to large rollers for the set. After removal, section the front by parting slightly to one side and sectioning vertically down to the ear on both sides. Without combing out the curls in back, place them randomly on the top and pin securely. Then take the already-parted hair in front and pull each section back and pin it. Leave a few strands out in front for bangs.

Look 3
For this style, after roller setting the hair to give it some volume, tone it down by brushing through it thoroughly, but leaving some bend at the very ends. You can part it to one side, or try a zigzag part if desired.

Look 4
Natalie’s long, gorgeous hair was set on big rollers. You should leave these in for at least 20 minutes, then take them down and lightly pick through the hair. Pull some to one side, and then spray to hold.

Look 5
After setting the hair, gather hair in the front in sections, pull it up and tease it to add lift, then smooth it back and attach it with bobby pins. Dressed it up a bit with an ornamental barrette, then pull a few strands out from just above the temple area and curl them to complete the style.
